The year 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Over this period, numerous artists have confronted the reality of the bombing. Through their rich imaginations, they have explored the fundamental meaning of the atomic bomb and created works depicting the lives and struggles of survivors and the preciousness of life.
This collection exhibition combines works from our museum's holdings with pieces borrowed from outside institutions, seeking to trace the origins of artists' imaginations regarding the Hiroshima atomic bombing.
We also hope it will provide an opportunity for us to reflect on our own “imagination for the 80th anniversary of the bombing.” (text: flyers)

*The exhibition view shows, on the right, “Earth-Self Portrait” (1986), painted shortly after becoming a second-year university student, and on the left, “Earth-Self Portrait with Moon” (1989), painted three years later as a first-year graduate student. The display stand features a page from the master's thesis containing photographs of the motif.

歴史をひもとくことは、私たちの今のくらしのあり方をより深く理解することにもつながります。私たちの生活は過去と切り離されたものではなく、また、この先の未来にもつながっているのです。社会の変化が大きく、先が予測できない今だからこそ、改めて過去を見つめ、歩んでいくことが必要なのではないでしょうか。
この展覧会では特に、人と「環境」がどのように関わってきたかにスポットをあてます。私たちの生活にとって、自然は身近ではなくなってきているようにも感じますが、私たちは自然に頼らずに生きていくことはできません。人は森や川、海などの自然環境との関係を築いた上に、町などの社会環境をつくり、その中でくらしているのです。そうした私たちの生活と深く結びついている環境と人との関係の歴史をひもとくことで、よりよい未来を作っていくヒントを探していきましょう。

現代美術家 柴川敏之氏が生み出す 「2000年後の世界」から、今の福岡を見つめます。

本展では、「2000年後から見た現代社会」をテーマに活動する現代美術家の柴川敏之氏のアート作品も展示します。2000年後に発掘された今の私たちのくらしを表現するインスタレーションを通して、遠い未来にタイムスリップし、「今」もまた長い歴史の一部であるということを伝えます。
