The Izayama Art Forest Power Plant Museum in Nyuzen Town is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Toshiyuki Shibakawa as part of its fiscal year 2026 special exhibition series.
The year 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of the start of operations at the former Kurobe River No. 2 Power Plant, the predecessor to this museum. The brick walls, which have marked the passage of time since the facility’s completion in 1926, harbor unique layers of time that resonate with the perspective of “archaeology of the future” that Shibakawa has been exploring. Starting from the imaginative premise of what contemporary everyday objects would look like if they were “unearthed” as artifacts (fossils) 2,000 years from now in the 41st century, Shibakawa has created works that imprint traces of time onto materials.
In this exhibition, the building is conceptualized as Mr. N, who has reached his 100th birthday. By superimposing the 100 years of Mr. N’s life with a perspective on the future yet to be discovered, the exhibition presents an installation where past, present, and future intersect. The space where water was once converted into electricity has now transformed into a venue that generates cultural energy. This transformation resonates with the theme of “the accumulation of time” that Shibakawa explores, and the building itself—which harbors 100 years of memory—blends into the world of the artwork as a gigantic “vessel of time.”
The memories of the power plant passed down from 100 years ago, the traces that modern everyday objects leave for the future, and a gaze that imagines the world 100 years from now, and even 2,000 years from now. As these three timelines overlap, viewers’ sense of time is shaken, leading them to an experience that redefines the distance between past and future. ◎内容：このたび入善町下山芸術の森発電所美術館では、2026年度企画展として現代美術家 柴川敏之の個展を開催いたします。
2026年は、本館の前身である旧黒部川第二発電所が稼働してから100年の節目にあたります。1926年の竣工以来、長い時間を刻んできたレンガ壁には、柴川が探求してきた「未来の考古学」という視点と響き合う独自の時間の層が宿っています。柴川は、現代の日用品が2000年後の41世紀に“出土品（化石）”として現れたらどう見えるのかという想像力を起点に、時間の痕跡を物質に刻む作品を生み出してきました。
本展ではこの建築物を、百寿を迎えたN氏に見立て、N氏が歩んできた100年の時間と、これから見つめていく未来の視点を重ね合わせながら、過去・現在・未来が交差するインスタレーションを展開します。かつて水が電力へと変換されていた空間は、いまや文化のエネルギーを生み出す場へと姿を変えました。その変遷は、柴川が探求する「時間の堆積」というテーマと呼応し、100年の記憶を宿す建物そのものが巨大な“時間の器”として作品世界に溶け込んでいきます。
100年前から受け継がれてきた発電所の記憶、現代の日用品が未来へ残す痕跡、そして100年後、さらには2000年後の世界を想像するまなざし。三つの時間軸が重なり合うことで、観る者は自身の時間感覚を揺さぶられ、過去と未来の距離を新たに捉え直す体験へと導かれます。歴史をまとった空間と未来を掘り起こすような柴川の作品が響き合うこの場で、季節の移ろいとともに漂う静かな時間の流れに身をゆだね、心の奥に眠る記憶と未来がふと交差する瞬間を味わっていただければ幸いです。（text:チラシ）
